Open Acrylics

Decided to try the Open Acrylics from Golden. Basically there acrylics that take longer to dry. I used them in class today and seamed pretty ok. The cool part though is 5 hours later i decide to make a super quick practice of colours and values with the leftover paint that i had from my class. When guess what, they were pretty workable and the painting turned out not so bad. You can mixed the paint with the previous layer if your working fast enough but not as much as oil. but that might be because i worked on non gessoed wood. Ill keep on working with them for a bit and see if ill stick with them. Only hick is that there bit expensive; 5-12cad a tube for a 60ml tube.

Anyways this was referenced from a piece from Klimt.

I just finished my last exam for this semester (medical anatomy). But while handing in my exam i got to take back my last project "the naked diver". Guess what one of the comments was?: "You should consider medical illustration at UofT".
Thanks! I'm not being sarcastic considering that its a really hard domain to get into and all.

Again this year, I'm going to be taking 2 classes this summer plus work. It seams like it never stops. But hey, ill be taking my first vacation/trip in 8 years. yeah I know it's been a long time. I'm flying out of this continent for the whole month of august. I just can't wait.

Oh and soon ill be posting the short graphic novel that i drew in a couple of days (really!) its was so rushed i didn't put bubble for the text. anyways its was an experience that thought me alot about making graphic novels.

I don't know what to say about this one, other than you wont see stuff like that from me often.
The origianal concept for the phobia project. Well let me start from the beginning I was supposed to create a 3 frames narrative story with somewhat a begin, a middle and an end. So here was my train of thought; I didn't want to take the usual phobias such as the fear of the dark, dentist, heights etc. I wanted to take a commun fear like the "fear of commitment" and push it to an an extreme to a point where it becomes a satire/a phobia. An extreme where the second a person feels a hint of a relationship they have sabotage it by cheating with the closest person around. So, the first image; a guy is presenting his girlfriend to his best friend holding hands on the table. 2- Nervous she right away with her leg caresses the best friend under the table. 3- Afraid of this new commitment that might arise with this women he reaches for his best friend's tie and start caressing it. Creating this vicious relation circle.
So what u think?
I know, I know it's off subject because its not a real phobia.
Instead i found myself doing Dextrophobia ( fear of thing on the right side such as turning right). Man these cars are ugly!!!

'Should Have Left a Note" is a short sequential narrative piece that works as an promotion piece.
The 11x17 is folded and shaped into a booklet and every panel becomes a page. Once unfolded by the viewer the back become the final piece. Trust me once printed things look a lot less overcharged and story flows better.

Well i guess this is the first post of 2009, which started by the way with being part of an art show at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto. The event was great and magnificently organized by Julia Ainsworth. While the show was a amazing experience i somehow come out of it with the feeling that i am going to have to work extra harder from now on, mostly because my work just isn't at the quality i would like it to be.
I decided to start departing from digital work and my comfort zone to switch to fully traditional mediums. And that is what you'll start seeing more often from now on. So, a month ago I started brush and ink toward reaching a graphic novel style and during the next months ill developing a way to interpret my colors into a gouache medium. I am just hopping that ink and gouache isnt a bad mix ( two water based solutions).

for those who may to see the show in person, the pieces will be for show until the 21th of January.

Here the only project this year that my teach actually said a good comment about. " its your best this year". Well compared to the comments i gotfor the previous projects this is not really a compliment. What ever.
This one is a poster for the Cirque du Soleil's Kooza show.
For those who don't know, Cirque du Soleil is a Quebec based circus that strongly believes in not using animals in there show. Oh and did i say that it is probably one of the best in the world.
So what i did here is i looked at the there website and some video and audio and tried to imagine what the poster should look like. This Mix Media is a compilation of images and drawing both digital and traditional.

Here a project i wanted to post for a long time now. this was done in just a few (4 or 5)days . cuz i had to rush it before going for a trip to montreal.
the whole concept is a narrative image that u follow while listening to MosDef song "got" .
there is a transition in space & time but also in the life of the characters that evolve in the city. from left to right.

the full size of the piece when i printed it was 7 or 8 11x17 papers put next to each other. i was fucking huge.
i had to color the thing in three separate files and when i put it all together it just kept on crashing my mac... man it was so heavy...
so what do you think about it?

Yeah... i don't have internet anymore for the rest of the summer. Isn't that just great.

well ive been off for a while now... Sorry about that. I have been doing some insane hours at work. at my 2 jobs actually + summer school. And couldn't find time for my self... Nothing much really. I got the two jobs on the same day pizza-maker in a gourmet pizzeria and canvas stretcher in an art gallery... and im doing like 13 hours shifts from monday friday + i work on the week end... my tuesday/thursday looked somthing like 10-3 at the pizza then 3-6 at the gallery and 6-9 at school, thats all with not time inbetween... man it is harsh. but well ... im trying to cut some hour from the gallery... Here's a piece i just couldn't wait to post. It is based on the early pic of the Joker played by Heath Ledger RIP. Dark Knight is the movie im am the most excited about for this summer. Man everything that comes out of it is just beautiful, from the trailler to the whole viral marketing project. man its incredible.

Well what about it hein.
i don't know. Its just damn good. thats all.
i went from season 1 to season 4 in the last 4 or 5 days and i just can't wait for the new episodes.
And since i finished catching up. i came back to reality and all i want to do is go back in this fictional world.
why is that ? i could be because all i was doing is watching this serie one after the other its easier to get attached unlike when you watch only 1 episode per week. where you forget about it for six days and then u come back. i was rolling episode after episode after episode.
But im thinking about all the shows that made me feel like that. lets not say shows but stories. which stories made me feel like that. well its not alot but here: Lost, full metal Alchemist, six feet under, battlestar galactica, Sopranos. all these show i have watched theire episodes back ot back... could that be the reason?

man i am craving Scifi right now like there is no tomorrow... and there hasn't been a lot of it recently either.

the top-left frame is a 2nd layer to the cover (the top-right frame) and was printed on a translucent plastic. Followed by the result (bottom-left) and the back cover...

well theses are 3 different images of the same face. all traditional.
The first one is inked outline
the second is a acrylique painting. Its somehow represents the multi-facets of Jack's roles.
and the third is a realistic representation of him made with graphite.

This is one hell of a hard technique... called something like reverse gouache or reverse ink... it consists of painting all the negative space with gouache, covering the whole thing with ink and finally wash the to take off the gouache...
so much for the retro look!

The Beast Final

so finally here's is the final piece...
as u can see i omitted the eyes that were in the sketch... i kinda liked them but i guess i has to afraid to ruin the painting of the face near the end... but i think the effect i got is better!

I'm pretty proud of it as a first oil painting. I'm really starting to get hook up by acrylics and oil paintings. its really enjoyable.

The Beast

So i decided to share the steps of one of my current projects...
so ...ok the final result is going to be an oil painting (water mixable oil paint) 10x10 on a canvas that i will gesso 2 of 3 times.
its actually my first oil painting ever... sooooo mush pressure. oh almost forgot the theme is beast.
I spent the day sketching monsters and stuff before stopping on this one...
I'll most likely to go for the A one ( having the monster upside down)!!!

i know its fugly...but its a test.
and trust me traditional is harder than digital. (for me at least)
this the the first color test i've done. kinda to see the properties of oil paint.
i find it pretty hard to use... but the drying time will certainly come in handy in comparison to acrylics. beast prt-3
ok heres the the real piece... thats the mid-tone plus some highlights and shadows.
nothing much to say other than some anatomy problems like the size of the right arm that i have corrected...

the head is almost finished while the right arm is still to be redone. but the atmosphere is starting to appear...

Moving in&out

so during this week-end ill be moving out from my multi unit room to a 2 room unit... which means ill have a bigger room for a cheaper price... BUT its unfurnished... which also means i loose the bed, the desk, the chair and the curtains. oh and the curtain rod and the closet rod... how fucked up is that ... they say the rods aren't included in the room. I'm supposed to get a curtain rod and nail it to their fucking wall... thats absurd because i live in a student residence...

anyways I'm getting bigger for cheaper... which i need right now. so im not saying NO.

its pretty good actually...

i've recently made an acrylic painting of the joker... and i love the experience the whole time i was doing it. and trust me its hard to enjoy art when its a homework at 4 in the morning to be given the next day. painting traditional has a thing that digital doesn't. its hard to explain but it a sensation... anyways for me at least.
until now i have worked with watercolor, makers, ink , gouache, acrylic and am going to try oils now... for my projects...
the things i've been doing... well just check the gallery!!! the newest stuff. some say too abstract, or too Art Plastique... but thats just a choice of mine. something i wanted to explore right now... and it doesn't mean i'm not gonna do some comics when i finish.

how's toronto... well.. its a stinking city that doesn't compare to montreal...trust me!
but that does not mean that i'm going to go back to mtl when i finish university... i was thinking london for a bit. will see...
btw theres cgoing to be a 4 day comicon in toronto this summer ...i think in june... i cant afford it right now ... ill try to get some money and go see it...

well i got a bunch of new art to show. (especially the joker one)
im working on 3 different sketchbooks. a brown-paper one... a still life one and a regular crappy one for school. but u wont see the sketch book until they are finish so... sorry about that.

"I met Ahmed through school. We happened to be in the same animation class. But it's only by the second year that I really got to know him better and work side by side with him on our class assigments. I quickly started admiring his style. Ahmed was surprising, creative and funky. His work wasn't always to the liking of the teachers technicly, but we, fellow students, were all admiring his drawings. As we got to the end of our program, Ahmed had put together a really refreshing student movie, where you could definetly sense his instinct for style and colors. With a few solid sketchy lines, Ahmed brings us right to the point. After graduation, Ahmed left us for a 3 year program in illustrations in Toronto. I've been fallowing his art through this time and I've just been amazed how quickly Ahmed's pieces were getting stronger, deeper and more professionnal. He took the time to explore a lot of different mediums to create his own style. As I see him grow as an artist, I am noticing the impressive confidance that he's buiding up for himself. School is coming to an end this year, and who knows which challenge will be wainting for him on the other side. But I am positive that Ahmed will know how to get just what he wants and is meant for. He is definetly someone to keep an eye on and just worth discovering and enjoying his creative approach to visual art."
